VIAM Contribution in Tu-144 Creation

27.12.2017

The All-Russian Institute Of Aviation Materials (VIAM) plays major role fot the commercial supersonic transport aircraft Tu-144 from the engineering.

The KNRTU-KAI interactive technology museum’s project based on first supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 is supported by various key partners, such as the All-Russian Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM).

To be noticed, VIAM has been taking significant place in plane’s engineering. It was needed to create new materials and processing technology. Many tasks had to be solved for the first time. Thus, the Tu-144 became the first aircraft where high-temperature aluminum alloys were widely used, and the share of titanium alloys increased to 19.4%. Also aircraft operating conditions required a large amount of research work on a new generation of non-metallic materials.

One of the major airframe materials has become established in VIAM heat resistant aluminum alloy. Besides, the design of VIAM-based titanium alloys is widely used in the construction.

In the future, the technical museum will install an interactive demonstration complex informing about VIAM’s contribution for Tu-144.  One of the possible variants of the proposed exhibit is shown in the picture on top.
